- Just because you like Japan, it doesn't mean Japan likes you. From many reports, Japan has cool stuff, but it's negatives are glaring.
- Flash game: Boomshine - it's all about chain reactions.
- New York City in HDR. There's some pretty awful HDR out there, overdone, too much colour, unreal in a bad way. This kind of work is multiple levels above everything else.
- YouTube: strange faux-anime hypnotising girl. She has little to no point, yet I like to look at her face. *shrug*
- Ask a Korean - although some of the questions could relate to any Asian culture, there are lots of interesting facts about Korean life/people/food here. Aimed at ignorant white people, and by the standard of questions, there are many of us out there. But hey, you only learn by asking.

"Mulching" is not a new sexual practice
'If you’re planting in a garden, you need to be digging that garden over now. Well, not now, it’s probably dark. But over the next week or two you need to be turning the soil over so it’s crumbly and then mulching it. “Mulching” is not in fact a new sexual practise invented by Something Awful. It means covering the soil you just dug over with compost.Warren Ellis does me the world of good. You see, the Earth’s natural tendency is to fuck with you. This is the secret of gardening. The planet does not want to give you anything. Mulching the soil is like waterboarding Gaia. It’s the Human saying to the Planet, “give me what I want or I will continue to drown you in handfuls of shit.” Be merciless.'

- Modblog asked about body mods - piercings to teflons - in the workplace and the personal experiences of some are incredibly interesting and almost outrageous. If you're employed with piercings et al, you should continue to be employed with them regardless of changes in management - yet this is not so in this real world we live in

- I'll admit it: I'm sad to have missed the demise of Vera Duckworth. All the soaps in America are very stereotypical and fake: soft glow, rich people, accelerated drama. So it's not hard to feel a pang of homesickness when reminded of Corrie et al.

- Mireya Navarro on the pitfalls of modern plastic surgery: " As a celebrity, Tisdale might have expected scrutiny. (At least she still looks like herself, unlike Grey, the "Dirty Dancing" star whose rhinoplasty altered her face so much that her acting jobs dried up.) But anticipating and dealing with negative reaction to changed looks is not just for the boldface set."

Dandelion
Dandelion was adopted from San Diego Animal Services (the South shelter). At the moment they're adopting cats over the age of 1 year for $29, a service that includes microchipping and spay/neutering if needed. The staff are wonderful: patient, kind and they take great care of the animals there. The south shelter in particular were adopting some dogs for free, apparently desperate for space. If you live in the San Diego area and you were thinking of adopting an animal, please consider it. There are many that need good homes.

Seattle: 1st Avenue
I was walking along 1st Avenue, being a complete idiot noob to the city, trying to not look like a tourist, trying to keep my camera dry beneath my coat, trying to make sure I didn't miss anything, trying not to walk in puddles or slip on the metal grating that Seattle helpfully puts in the middle of the sidewalk - when I came along this hoard of layered posters and paste ups. There was so much to pull from it, I didn't know where to begin, and made myself stop at six images before I lost my entire mind (click through to Flickr for the other two, they didn't fit neatly into this post): this is my favorite kind of culture in a city, where things are piled on top of each other and allowed to fall off.

I didn't remember one thing, but it was fun."

Absolutely Insane Binge Drinking Problem
"Without going into huge detail, as a misplaced american living in the UK, they've got an absolutely insane binge drinking problem here. It's socially acceptable but nobody will actually admit it is. I'd argue that most of the towns, cities, villages, etcetera become virtual no-go zones after 11 or so due to the drunk as fuck hostiles. Just pick a town, wait until nightfall and wander around. See how many drunk fuckheads yell at you or try and pick a fight. From Metafilter, Lord Pall on the English and binge drinking. He is 100% accurate in his observations.
It's really ridiculous. I'm unsure if it's getting better or worse, but for fucks sake people. Because of alcohol, I'd say the English are some of the worst behaved people in Europe. And that's just fucked up. Go to Belgium, Finland, Italy, wherever. They might drink as much but they don't pee on things, vomit all over the place, pick fights, stab passerbys on bikes, shout at people going to work, etcetera."
